5 Tips for Healthy Eating Habits

Eating healthy does not have to be a chore. There are many ways to incorporate healthy foods that taste good and are filling into anyone’s lifestyle. I have kids with very active lives. At first, it seemed very overwhelming to try and eat healthy with a busy schedule and not enough time to cook. Here are some simple tips I have found to be very effective in making sure my family eats healthy every day.

Tip #1: Stay out of the middle aisles in a grocery store. These aisles are full of processed foods laden with high sodium and mass amounts of preservatives. Try to shop in the outer aisles of the supermarket first and fill up your basket with fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins.

Tip #2: Make lists of healthy foods that you like. It was a struggle in my family because everyone liked different types of food. When you have a list of foods you can choose from, that are healthy, it can make grocery shopping easier. Guessing what healthy foods will be big sellers in your house can be exhausting. Sit down with each person, and go through each healthy food group to pull some great ideas out. This can be a fun family challenge for everyone.

Tip #3: If you have a busy schedule, try and prepare food for the next evening the night before. I have also found that preparing food during the weekend can make it quick and easy to warm up dinner for the night. You will have the advantage of eating healthy and on time, without resorting to fast food.

Tip #4: Have grab bags with snacks that each person can take with them to have throughout the day. One of the single most tempting problems with my family was when someone was hungry during errands or after activities, I would stop and buy them something not so healthy in a pinch. Preparing Ziplock baggies full of healthy snacks such as peanut butter and crackers, nuts, dried fruit, and granola can really help to stay healthy during the day. This is also important for eating during the workday. Having snacks at your disposal in your desk drawer will keep you from craving the bad foods.

Tip #5: Stay hydrated. Drinking adequate amounts of water can keep your body balanced and able to operate properly. Water is one of the most important substances the body requires in order to be healthy.
